Rye Harrison Veterinary Hospital
Meet Our Doctors

Dr. Gary Yarnell

Dr Gary Yarnell graduated from Cornell University’s distinguished School of Veterinary Medicine in 1977 as one of the school’s youngest graduates. Driven by his passion for the field, he was able to complete his undergraduate studies at Cornell in two- and- a -half years with a Bachelor of Science degree, and then was immediately accepted to its veterinary college.
As the culmination of his lifelong dream, Dr. Yarnell purchased what is now the Rye Harrison Veterinary Hospital from Dr. Howard Harmon in 1980. At the time, the practice consisted of one part-time and one full-time veterinarian, with a support staff of four. Building a reputation as a skilled and caring doctor, Dr. Yarnell was available to his patients and their owners 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Since its very first year, the practice under Dr. Yarnell’s leadership experienced a rapid and sustained growth. Today it employs six full-time veterinarians and a support staff of 28 individuals in a new state-of -the-art facility.
Dr. Yarnell grew up on Long Island’s South Shore, and has lived in Rye with his wife Laurie, a writer, since 1981. They have two children: Nikki a singer actress and Adam, currently attending Brown University. Of course, they will never truly be empty- nesters with Maggie their Lab, and Kaylee their Standard Poodle, sharing their bed and their hearts.

Dr. John Pisciotta

Dr. John Pisciotta is one of the United States’ leading experts on exotic pets, a category that includes everything from baby turtles to boa constrictors. At RHVH in Westchester, NY, more than 50 percent of his patients are exotics, often the result of referrals from other veterinarians, bird clubs, and breeders.
Fascinated with exotic pets since his childhood on Long Island, he grew up with a vast variety of them, including snakes, turtles, tortoises, frogs, lizards, birds, ferrets, guinea pigs, mice, rabbits, and other “pocket pets.” This fascination with animals led to his first job, conducting tours for a local park.
After completing his undergraduate education at Muhlenberg College and graduate studies at Perdue, he served an internship at the famed Animal Medical Center in Manhattan and became an active member of the Association of Avian Veterinarians.
Having shared quarters with so many different species of animals throughout his life, Dr. Pisciotta feels very comfortable handling, examining, and discussing the proper care of all exotic pets. A major part of his work is educating people about the needs of these very special pets. Because preventative medicine is so important with exotic and other pets, he helps his clients learn as much as possible about their basic care, nutrition, and husbandry.
Dr. Pisciotta lives in Croton-on-Hudson with his wife Stephanie, their four children, and an assortment of cats, dogs, and birds.

Dr. Jeremy Sabatini

Dr. Sabatini’s interest in domestic and exotic animals began at a young age. Thanks to very understanding parents, Dr. Sabatini grew up with a variety of pets. His continued interest in these amazing animals naturally led him to pursue a career in veterinary medicine.
After receiving his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2002, Dr. Sabatini did a clinical year at Kansas State Veterinary Teaching Hospital and a medical and surgical internship at Long Island Veterinary Specialists in Plainview, New York. He also served as chief veterinarian of the Trevor Zoo for two years, and worked in the exotics departments at the Animal Medical Center and the Bronx Zoo.
With a special interest in exotic pets, especially reptiles, Dr. Sabatini continues to further develop his knowledge of these fascinating animals. He lives with his wife and young son in Brewster, NY, where they share their home with such exotics, such as snakes and tortoises, as well as four dogs, three cats, a horse, and a bird.

Dr. Shelley Skopit

Dr. Shelley Skopit received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2003. Dr. Skopit is now available for complementary and alternative medicine consults, primarily focusing on using acupuncture as an adjunct to traditional Western medical treatment plans. As these consults can take about an hour, please specify your interest in this service when setting up an appointment, so that we can be sure to schedule you for the appropriate amount of time.

Dr. Skopit lives in northern Westchester with her husband, whom she met in veterinary school. They have two golden retrievers, "Beemer" and "Benjamin", and a cat, "Cisco". Dr. Skopit’s hobbies include baking & cake decorating, photography, reading, traveling, hiking, and dabbling in baking unique, natural dog biscuits!
