List of Topics and Concentration:

* Jumping Skills for the Agility Dog: July 13 - WORKING SLOTS FULL
July 20 - OPEN

Requirements: Open to dogs of any level that are at least 14 months old and can sequence several jumps and tunnels.

Description: The majority of any agility course consists of jumps. Just because your dog can jump, doesn’t mean they know how to jump. Using grids, straight lines, and bend work, these sequential workshops will teach your dog the mechanics of jumping: balance, striding, scope, and appropriate paths and takeoff points. Conditioning exercises will also be covered. Activities will include both independent jump work and handler involvement.

* Contacts & Weaves with Handling: July 27 - OPEN
  August 3 - OPEN

Requirements: Dogs need to have an established contact behavior on all three obstacles and mastery of at least six weave poles.

Description: These workshops will include maintaining contact criteria, front and rear crosses before and after the contacts and weave poles, developing independent contact and weave pole performance, and weaves pole entrances and exits. Table work will be included in this workshop, if time permits and participants are interested.

* Competition Handling Skills: August 10 - OPEN
August 17 - OPEN
August 24 - OPEN

Requirements: Dogs must be able to sequence jumps & tunnels.

Description: These workshops are intended to practice and perfect handling maneuvers using primarily jumps and tunnels. The concepts covered will be front crosses, rear crosses, including send work necessary for a rear cross, blind crosses, pulls, push-throughs, wraps, forward and lateral turning cues, and the use of both motion, and acceleration and deceleration to cue the dog as to where they are going on course. Serpentines, threadles, 180s, 270s, pinwheels, and other common patterns found on an agility course will be included within the sequences. Start line work will also be covered.

This workshop will focus on some of those foundation skills that are often left behind after puppy training. Impulse control games such as "It's Yer Choice" , the valuable Crate Games and building motivation and value for working through distractions. Do you need distance work, more solid stays, or confidence with distractions? This workshop is for you. This comprehensive workshp is for those with young puppies and green dogs just being introduced to dog sports and performance, and those with more experienced, seasoned dogs needing more focus, improved attention and drive.

EXCEL IN AGILITY with your SMALL DOG
with Melissa Frye
Sunday, July 19, 2009
8:30am - 4:30pm

When training for optimum performance in agility and other dog sports, small dogs present special challenges!  Naturally, handling choices and contact behaviors are very different for a 10" dog that weighs 6 pounds than a big dog - or at least they should be!  Becoming familiar with your options and choices can make all the difference in your perfomance.

In this comprehensive workshop, learn how to optimize your training and handling skills for your "mighty mite":
  • What is the best cross for my small dog?
  • How can I maximize my small dog's speed?
  • What should I be doing with my contacts?
  • What about training weaves and the small dog?
  • And more!
Work on both full sized and TDAA equipment! About Melissa Frye:

Melissa Frye is a full-time Agility teacher with WOOFS! Dog Training in Arlington VA.
She has put MACHs on three cocker spaniels, and taken two to WT try-outs as well as many nationals.  She has the #1 ibizan hound in AKC agility for many years, and her BC is just starting ot compete seriously.  Says Melissa, "Working with lots of different breeds has really helped me understand what works for a range of dogs - not just a subset.
Working as an instructor has helped me understand the one-size doesn't fit all when it comes to students either!  I really believe in the importance of making agility fun for the dogs and the handlers. Positive isn't just for the dogs!"

8 hour workshop will include a 45 minute lunch break.
