Health testing includes Hearts, Hips, Eyes and Patella by board certified Cardiologist and Ophthalmologist. No dog is used for breeding, unless cleared by these specialists. Breeding for good health is very important. It does not guarantee your puppy against the health concerns in this breed. When testing is done from one generation to the next it does increase the odds of good health. I do offer a health guarantee on my puppies, as laid out in my contract.
The statistics state that 50% of all cavaliers will have some form of MVD or heart murmur by the age of 5 and close to 90% by the age of 10. It is in every bloodline. Many dogs do extremely well in spite of their murmurs. Some never require medication and still live on for years. Some do require meds but still do not show any outward signs of a problem. Unfortunately there are others who develop MVD and die earlier than they should.
Beware of the Back yard breeder who tells you they do testing, but cant produce the paperwork! How do you know if you are dealing with a backyard breeder? Are they involved in the dog world in a way other than breeding? Showing in conformation, doing agility, obedience or therapy? Do they belong to their local breed club? If they are breeding to improve the breed, they need to be involved with others who do the same, working together as a club toward that goal. Do the dogs live in the house with them? Are they well cared for, friendly and outgoing? These are just a few things to look for. For more on Cavalier Health. If you have questions you may contact me HERE. I will be glad to help you in any way I can.
