Buying a Saddle...
|
Finding the right saddle for your horse doesn't have to be as difficult as it seems!
Here are some tips to make it easier:
|
| Do some homework and try to have an idea of what you're looking for. |
| |
Do you need a semi quarter or a full quarter tree?
Do you like a Wade tree?
Do you like a suede seat or a slick seat?
Do you prefer a Cheyenne roll?
Will the overall weight of the saddle be a factor?
Do you know which companies have better reputaions over which other companies?
Have you considered having a saddle custom made? |
If you're looking at used saddles, beware of places that sell saddles on consignment. I've been to one store that marks them up 30%! I think it was cheaper for me to buy new! We all understand they have to make SOME money for it - just make sure it's reasonable.
Ask how long of a trial period they offer. Even the Boot Barn gives you 48 hours. Many stores give you one week.
Ask if the store offers any discounts on other items purchased if you're buying a saddle. Some stores give you a certificate or gift card worth 10% of the price of the saddle which should easily pay for a good saddle pad or a bridle and a bit.
Change the cinch and the stirrups before trying the saddle on your horse. No matter how hard you try, you just can't keep these perfectly clean if they're brand new.
And more...
Try not to be selfish. When it comes down to it, the saddle is so much more important to the horse than to the rider. Treat it as if buying a saddle for your horse is like you picking out your next truck (okay... maybe you have a car, sorry!)
Keep in mind that saving $300 now could cost you soooo much later if your horse isn't comfortable.
