I adopted Badger, a wild mustang, on Sunday, May 20, 2007. He was only 13 months old when I adopted him. He is the foal of a pregnant mare that had been captured. He's coming along unbelievably well already... take a look!
Day 2...

Badger's cell mate
seems to like him
already!

Carrot bribery

Trying to keep two young horses from nipping me at the same time!

Day 8...

Our First Kiss
|

Some good old rubbin'
|

Haltered at last!
|
By Day 10 (darn my full time job - it really slows our progress down!) he could be haltered and lead around. It was his first day out of his cell. I lead him down to Mihijo's stall, around the lower part of the property and in and out of the roundpen. He seemed rather happy about everything!
Day 11...

"Approach Success"
I didn't have to rope him!
|

He doesn't seem to mind the halter at all.
|

He already knows what it means to be "sent" (aka lunging or circling game)
|
|

Is it just me...
or does he get cuter
by the second?!
|

Not much to graze on
in the roundpen!
|

I wondered if his quick acceptance of the brush meant that he knew how unruly his hair was!
|
By Day 13 he was willingly loading into a trailer.
On Day 21 he was a highlight at a LACDACCERT brush-up class. He didn't mind the crowd or all the strange noises at all. He even let one of the volunteers go into his pen and catch him!
August 10, 2007 - I can't believe it's almost been 3 months already!
Badger had his first bath around the end of June. He was caught up to date on vaccinations around the same time and was less than thrilled about that strangles goo that the big mean man in the beige suit (the vet) tried to force up his nostril. He made it very clear that he will ONLY do something like that for me (awwwww).
The little guy moved this week and is finding out if he likes the weather any better on the other side of town. He's undecided at this point.
He's doing just great overall - growing like a weed, of course! He is very willing to be haltered and always very excited to be turned out and be able to run, buck and fart!

The boy is REALLY into chow time!

Badger now backs out of a trailer. He still needs a lot of work with his feet - any volunteers???
February 7, 2008
I'm looking for a new home for Badger. I haven't found a new job yet so one horse has to go. I haven't had him for a year yet so anyone who would like to adopt him would need to be approved by the BLM and there would be a $25 fee. Their application process is quite painless. He'll be back over at Lone Star Ranch by this weekend so just call me to make an appointment to see him if you're interested.

I was granted title to Badger by BLM back in June or July. I was still looking to place him but wasn't trying too hard. I had a couple people that wanted to take him but the situations just didn't feel right. I really wanted him to go to "the right person". I was trying to find that person through word of mouth but finally resorted to placing some ads, and, low and behold, "the right person" came along! I delivered Badger to his new mom, Chrisshanna, on November 20th. I'm hoping she'll send lots of photos so we can all track Badger's progress. The only one I have of them for now was taken just after she'd given him a workout:
