Why our horses?

We believe that great horses start with good nutrition starting from the point of conception.  We feed our horses a mix of grass and alfalfa hay when pasture is not available.  We are also firm believers in Purina Mills Horse Feeds.  Most of our horses are easy keepers and are fed Nature’s Essentials® ENRICH™ 32 Supplement.  This is a low calorie feed with the essential vitamins & minerals with added protein that horses need.  We feed this to all of our horses, except mares in late pregnancy, lactating mares, and foals under a year of age.  When mares reach their last trimester of gestation we switch them to Purina Mills Strategy® Professional Formula GX and continue that until the foal is weaned.  Starting around 2 months of age and continuing until about one year, we feed our foals Purina Mills Omolene® #300 Growth Horse Feed.  We believe this feeding program gets our foals off to a great start in what should be a long, healthy life.

We are also firm believers in a regular worming program.  How can a young horse grow and be healthy with a worm load at anytime in their life?  Since foals have a lack of natural resistance built up we worm all of our foals starting at 1 month of age and continuing once every month until they are 1 year of age.  Our 1 to 2 year olds are wormed every two months and older horses every 3 months.  We worm mostly with ivermectin based wormer, but throw in others once or twice a year to change things up.

We also are diligent about trimming our horses' feet starting at about 1 1/2 months of age.  So many people ignore the feet of their foals while concentrating on their older or riding horses.  We believe that this way of thinking is completely backwards.  While we trim all of our horses regularly, we are extra diligent about keeping our young horses feet in good shape.

All of our horses get a complete set of yearly shots and weanlings will not leave the farm without their first and booster shots starting at 3 months of age.  (We usually wean about 3 1/2 months of age.)

If you buy a horse from us you can rest easy knowing that it has had good care for as long as we've owned it.
